Is LendKey legit? Yes. Itโs a real lending platform that takes refinance applications online, and the loan itself comes from a credit union or community bank in its network.
That last part is the whole point of LendKey. You get a local-lender loan without walking into a branch. Whether itโs the right place to refinance depends on two things you can check in a minute: your degree and your credit score.
The short answer
- LendKey is a marketplace. A credit union or community bank in its network makes your loan, not LendKey.
- You need a bachelorโs degree and a credit score of at least 650 to qualify.
- Checking your rate is a soft pull, so it wonโt touch your credit score.
- Refinance private loans with it freely. Refinancing federal loans ends your federal protections for good.
How LendKey refinancing works
You fill out one short form and get a rate quote in about two minutes, with no hit to your credit. Behind that quote is a network of credit unions and community banks that lend through LendKeyโs site.
Pick an offer and the lender you chose pays off your old student loans. From then on you make one payment to that new loan. LendKey also runs private student loans for school, so the same network lends to current students too.

Who qualifies
LendKey posts its rules plainly, which is more than some lenders do. Hereโs the list:
- A bachelorโs degree from an eligible school.
- A credit score of 650 or higher.
- U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.
- More than $5,000 to refinance. In Arizona the floor is $10,001, in Connecticut $50,001 and in Massachusetts $6,001.
- A minimum income. LendKey lists one, so check the figure on its site before you apply.
No bachelorโs degree? LendKey isnโt for you. Same goes for anyone who left school before finishing. Hereโs how its rules stack up against a few other lenders, using each oneโs own posted requirements:
| Lender | Degree | Credit score posted |
|---|---|---|
| LendKey | Bachelorโs degree | 650 minimum |
| Earnest | Undergraduate or graduate degree | 665 minimum |
| ELFI | Bachelorโs degree or higher | 680 minimum |
| SoFi | Enrolled at or graduated from an eligible school | No minimum posted |
| Splash Financial (marketplace) | Four-year degree, or an associate degree in an eligible field | Preferably 700 or higher |
So LendKeyโs 650 is one of the lower posted minimums. That doesnโt mean youโll get a low rate at 650. It means you can at least get a quote.
What it costs
The lenders on LendKey charge no origination fee, no application fee and no prepayment penalty. You can pick a term from 5 to 20 years, fixed or variable.
Rates move all the time, and LendKeyโs page doesnโt show a date on its range, so check the current rate on LendKeyโs site rather than trusting any number you read elsewhere. The rates it shows include a 0.25% autopay discount, so your rate without autopay runs a bit higher.
Next stepPlug the rate youโre quoted into our student loan refinance calculator to see what youโd actually save over the life of the loan.
Before you refinance federal loans
Federal student loans canโt be refinanced inside the federal system. Refinancing them with LendKey or any private lender takes them out for good, and Federal Student Aid says plainly that you lose the benefits.
That means no income-driven repayment (RAP or IBR), no Public Service Loan Forgiveness or other federal forgiveness, no federal deferment or forbearance, and no federal death or disability discharge. Thereโs no way back.
Not sure which of your loans are federal? Log in to studentaid.gov and open My Aid on your dashboard. Anything listed there is federal. Anything that isnโt is almost always private, and private loans are where refinancing makes the most sense.
The catch
LendKeyโs refinance page doesnโt name the credit unions and banks in its network. You find out who your lender is when you see your offers.
That matters because the lender, not LendKey, sets the fine print youโll live with for years. Before you sign, ask the lender three things. Can you pause payments if you lose your job? Is there a cosigner release, if youโre using a cosigner? And do you have to join the credit union to take the loan?
The other catch is the degree rule. If you have an associate degree or no degree, skip LendKey and look at a lender that takes you.
Bottom line: is LendKey worth a rate check?
If you have a bachelorโs degree, a 650 or better score and private loans at a high rate, yes. Itโs a soft pull, itโs free, and it puts a few credit union offers in front of you that you might not find otherwise. You can start on LendKeyโs site.
Just donโt stop at one quote. LendKey also shows up as a lender on Credibleโs marketplace, and a marketplace like Splash puts several lenders side by side. Get at least two quotes before you sign anything.
- See offers from Splashโs lending partners with a soft credit pull. Continuing to apply leads to a hard pull.
- No application fees, no origination fees and no prepayment penalties.
- Fixed terms of 5 to 20 years and variable terms of 5 to 25 years. Minimum $5,000.
- Best fit: private loans, a four-year degree, and credit of 700 or higher.
Splash Financial is a marketplace, not the lender. Your loan comes from one of its lending partners, and some are credit unions youโd need to join. Not all rates and amounts are available in every state. If you refinance federal loans through Splash, you lose federal benefits for good.
Yes. LendKey is a real online lending platform. It connects you with credit unions and community banks in its network, and one of those lenders makes and holds your loan.
No. LendKey gives you a personalized rate quote without affecting your credit score. A full application with the lender you pick is a separate step. Ask whether it triggers a hard credit pull before you submit it.
LendKey posts a minimum credit score of 650. You also need a bachelorโs degree, U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, and more than $5,000 to refinance.
Only if youโre sure you wonโt need federal protections. Refinancing federal loans with any private lender permanently ends income-driven repayment, federal forgiveness including PSLF, and federal deferment and forbearance.
LendKey says the lenders on its platform charge no origination fees, no application fees and no prepayment penalties.
